Guide: Improving Cooling in 2002 Honda Accord
This guide provides step by step instruction on solving the common overheating issues with 2002 Honda Accords.
Tools required
- Screwdriver
- Wrench
- New thermostat
- Antifreeze/Coolant
- Radiator flush kit
- Clean container
Steps to solve the overheating issue
Step 1: Check the Thermostat
The thermostat may be stuck in the closed position and is not allowing coolant to flow to the engine. Replace the thermostat if it is defective.
Procedure:
- Locate the thermostat. Typically, it's positioned where the top radiator hose attaches to the engine.
- Unbolt the thermostat housing using a wrench.
- Remove the old thermostat.
- Install a new thermostat and gasket.
- Reassemble the housing.
Step 2: Perform a Radiator Flush
If the cooling system is dirty or filled with rust and scale, it will not be able to properly cool the engine. A radiator flush can might resolve the issue.
Procedure:
- Insert the radiator flush kit into the radiator filler neck.
- Open the radiator drain plug, and let the coolant drain into a clean container.
- Once drained, close the radiator drain plug.
- Fill the radiator with water and radiator cleaner as per kit instructions.
- Run the engine as per kit instructions, then cool, and drain as before.
- Refill with appropriate coolant mix.
